Malacca was a crucial port during the European colonization of South East Asia and saw thousands of ships from across the globe pass through its waters. This history is preserved at Malacca's Maritime Museum as well as the remains of its "A Famosa" trading forts. The intermingling of multiple European cultures as well as the overlapping histories of colonial and native culture are celebrated in the pan-historical milieu of Malacca's antique row. Treasure (and trash) from Malacca's rich history waits to be uncovered in the nooks and crannies of Jonker Street.
A local tradition stemming directly from Malacca's history of immigration and cross-cultural exchange is Nonya cuisine. This cooking style was developed by the Peranakan - the descendents of early Chinese immigrants to Malaysia, and as a result is a fusion of Chinese and Malay culinary traditions, but has a flavour all its own, and there's no better place to experience it than Malacca!
